Wampum, Then and Now: The Saga of the Shell Across the Centuries

  • Tomaquag Museum 390 A Summit Road Exeter, RI, 02822 United States (map)

An online discussion of the profound influence Wampum has had both in Indigenous culture and colonial history. Its power traverses culture and time to signify multiple meanings, even contradictory ones to different peoples. A spiritual gift, a tribute to power, an exchange of monetary value — all these meanings rose and fell over centuries. But the meanings and uses to Indigenous people continue to grow, as do the skills and craftsmanship used in its creation.
