The Gift of the Strawberry
Free and open to the public, the annual Strawberry Thanksgiving Celebration hosted by the Tomaquag Museum will take place on June 20, 2026 from Noon to 4:00 PM at Ninigret Park in Charlestown, Rhode Island. Centered on the gift of the strawberry, the event brings together friends, food, Indigenous arts, and cultural performances in celebration.
Strawberry Moon marks a time of harvest and thanksgiving in many Indigenous traditions and is one of thirteen moons connected to seasonal teachings and gratitude. Strawberries are widely understood as symbols of friendship, forgiveness, and renewal. Tomaquag Museum has a long-standing tradition of hosting Strawberry Thanksgiving and has republished its children’s book Strawberry Thanksgiving, which shares a traditional story of reconciliation and renewed relationships inspired by the berry.
“Paulla Dove Jennings (Narragansett) authored this timeless children’s book, which was illustrated by Ramona Peters (Mashpee Wampanoag). The new edition includes archival photos evoking memories of my childhood,” said Loren Spears, Executive Director of the Tomaquag Museum. The book, along with a wide selection of other works by Indigenous authors, will be available for purchase at the event.
Attendees are invited to enjoy Indigenous artisans, food vendors, and performances by Native artists. Visitors can celebrate community, build new connections, and share in the seasonal gift of the strawberry.
