Education Intern, Haley Johnson (They/ Them); Mashpee Wampanoag

Haley Johnson is a ceramic artist originally from Falmouth, MA. They reside on the board of directors for Rhode Island’s first inclusive youth homeless shelter, Haus of Codec and serve as the Work Share Fellow at The Steel Yard in Providence, RI. After graduating from Rhode Island College in May 2021, with a BFA in Ceramics and a Minor in Art History, they are excited to continue working with the Indigenous Empowerment Network as an Intern, concentrating in education at the Tomaquag Museum in Exeter, RI.

Read About Haley’s IEN Journey!

Haley has been a part of IEN since November of 2020. Starting amidst a global pandemic, they grew their skills in social media and outreach in a time when the museum was closed to visitors. Their first project involved reformatting the Annual Honoring Auction to be a successful online event. These auctions have raised considerable funds for the museum and continue the work of the Indigenous Empowerment Network. Haley has also worked on maintaining the technical aspects of the Literature and Culture Author Conversations series found on youtube today.  Since reopening to the public in June, Haley has been assisting with private and public tours of all kinds! They have created a flip book of images to assist in their own general museum tour and have observed tours with varying topics! Their favorites include aspects of Traditional Ecological Knowledge, where nature and culture intertwine, and those revolving around arts.  Accompanying activities and achievements include a field trip to the Newport Restorations Foundation’s properties, and round table discussions with Indigenous entrepreneurs at Sly Fox Den Too, hosted by the Papitto Opportunity Connection.  Haley looks forward to joining the education team in the near future with a focus on arts and Traditional Ecological Knowledge.
